Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists take part in preoperative, intraoperative and post-operative procedures. They set up the operating room by gathering the supplies, instruments, and equipment needed throughout the procedure. They also aid other surgical team members in donning surgical gowns, masks, and gloves. Surgical technologists may also help connect surgical equipment and monitoring devices and transport, position and drape patients for surgery. During procedures, surgical technologist precisely and efficiently transmit instruments to the surgeon and provide other sterile materials during surgery. They remove sutures and prepare tissues for pathologists to examine, and maintain track of sponges, needles, and tools. Surgical technicians provide dressings and prepare the operating room for the next patient after the operation.

Job Outlook
Overall employment of surgical assistants and technologists is projected to grow 5 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. About 8,600 openings for surgical assistants and technologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
