Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG/ECG)

Electrocardiograph Technician (EKG/ECG technicians perform cardiac (heart) testing under a doctor’s supervision using an electrocardiogram or EKG. EKG technicians prepare equipment and patients, perform tests, and record heart functions on an electrocardiograph.

An EKG Tech will use heart health and condition knowledge to review the patient’s medical history, ensuring each patient’s results are the most informative and accurate readings possible.

Advanced EKG technicians can perform Holter tests, which record heart function for 24 to 48 hours. They also perform treadmill stress tests to monitor heart function.

Career Opportunities

Advanced EKG technicians can become Cardiovascular Technicians, Cardiovascular Technologists, or Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists (RCIS) with additional education. Emergency Room Technician, when combined with other training, emergency medical technician, and phlebotomy. 

Day in the Life

On average, an EKG technician will perform many health tests by measuring the heart’s electrical impulses. They will attach electrodes to specific parts of the patient’s body to receive and record these transmissions. Before performing these routine tests, an EKG technician will review the patient’s medical history. The EKG tech may conduct pre-surgery tests in patients’ rooms in acute medical settings. In ambulatory care settings, patients may need a test due to complaints of chest discomfort or pain.
