Futuro Health CEO Named Vice Chair of California Health Workforce Education and Training Council 

Established in 2022 as part of the Song-Brown Health Care Workforce Training Act, the Council is to advise on coordinating the state’s health workforce needs

CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan, appointed by Governor Newsom to the Health Workforce Education and Training Council, has been selected as Vice Chair. Sandra Baker, DNP, RN, CNE, ANEF, will serve as Chair.

California’s Health Workforce Education and Training Council is responsible for helping to coordinate California’s health workforce education and training to develop a health workforce that meets California’s health care needs. Composed of 17 members, appointees to the council represent various graduate medical education and training programs, health professions including but not limited to specialties for primary care and behavioral health, and consumer representatives.

“Van Ton-Quinlivan’s passion for advancing health workforce opportunities for diverse populations and her extensive health workforce development knowledge and experience within the public, private, and nonprofit sectors personifies the leadership of this Council,” said Department of Health Care Access and Information Director Elizabeth Landsberg. “We’re pleased to have her on the Council to help guide us in our pursuit of expanding equitable access to health care for all Californians.”

Ton-Quinlivan is a distinguished workforce development trailblazer who has created inclusive social and economic mobility for allied health students in higher education. A well-respected leader in the industry, she has contributed to the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Ton-Quinlivan previously served as executive vice chancellor of the California Community Colleges and is credited with increasing public investment growth towards career education. Featured as a workforce expert by the New York Times, Insider Higher Education, Chronicle of Higher Education, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and more, she is also a regular speaker at forums across the country.

“I am honored to serve on the California’s Health Workforce Education and Training Council. The need is great in healthcare, and we need to be intentional in ensuring this workforce reflects the communities being served,” says Ton-Quinlivan.

In 2013, Ton-Quinlivan was named a White House Champion of Change under the Obama administration in recognition of her notable career as an industry, education, and community service leader. In 2017, Van Ton-Quinlivan received the California Steward Leader Award for her dedicated collaboration with public, private, and civic leaders supporting economic and social mobility for state residents. In 2018, Sacramento Magazine named her a “Powered by Women” list of leaders inspiring positive change and in 2019, Ton-Quinlivan was named mediaX distinguished visiting scholar by Stanford University.

Ton-Quinlivan earned master’s degrees from the Stanford Graduate School of Education and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She serves on the boards of the National Skills Coalition, National Student Clearinghouse, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. She hosts the WorkforceRx podcast and is author of best-seller book, WorkforceRx: Agile and Inclusive Strategies for Employers, Educators and Workers in Unsettled Times.
